Maintenance Planning

I have put this chapter together so that we can understand the procedures behind the organisation and implementation of maintenance planning. This chapter will also include an introduction to track (Permanent Way (P-Way)) engineering, specifically looking at methods of testing, and to understand the procedures carried out when planning a major renewal.

For any kind of work to take place on the railway infrastructure, it has to be carried out as either core works or complementary works.

The differences between these two types of works are detailed below.

Core works are identified in the maintenance contract signed between Network Rail and the contractor. This is the maintenance that is carried out on a routine basis, whether it is once a week or once a year.

Complementary works can be considered as one off works, which are undertaken in order to rectify unforeseen problems, or to make improvements to the infrastructure. This is where the contractor is allowed to charge Network Rail more money than stated in the initial maintenance contract.
